The garden design followed on from the design of the house – it is often important that these elements (often viewed separately) are considered together -the effect of designing and building a beautiful room is lessened if their is no view or relationship to the immediate and wider landscape.
Areas for bench seats were considered at an early stage of the design process, and then paths from entry points or aligning with views from windows were laid down. The village in which the garden will be built has a number of early 20th century sunken gardens, so it was agreed to make reference to these and that this would provide a close focal point of interest from the large dining room bay and window seat. Paths will be a mix of kiln bottom bricks and York stone, and the retaining walls will reflect the cobble and tile detailing seen elsewhere. A planting scheme, reflecting the garden’s coastal location, will be prepared by others.
