Mantlepiece

A curious feature of a house owned by our client was an unfinished fireplace within a small reading nook. Why it was unfinished is not clear, but the house is a known work by Suffolk’s leading arts and crafts architect Frank Jennings (1877 – 1961). Existing features such as corbels and tile details had to be carefully surveyed, and these formed the starting point for our sketches.

We designed a bold cornice, that advances and recedes to suit the existing architecture. The result was a design that completes the fireplace and provides a central focus for the room. It was constructed from locally sourced quarter sawn oak.
